The government seat of Iberville Parish, Plaquemine is relatively close to two other Louisiana cities: Lafayette and New Orleans, 45 and 80 miles away, respectively. Plaquemine is situated close to many waterways, including three major ones: the Mississippi River, Bayou Plauquemine, and the Atchafalaya Basin. These waterways are part of a larger 3,000-mile system that is used as a shipping route along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts.

The area that is now Plaquemine was occupied by Native Americans as far back as a thousand years ago. In fact, the city’s name is derived from the French translation of a Native American word meaning persimmon, so named after the area’s many persimmon trees. The city prospered in the 1800s and early 1900s, as it became a major center of commerce due to its proximity to several waterways.

Today, Plaquemine is home to Dow Chemical Company, which opened in 1958 and remains the largest petrochemical facility in the state. The Union Pacific Railroad, which runs through the Plaquemine, is the second busiest railroad in the nation. The city has a 100-bed hospital and a 9-branch library system.

Plaquemine's public school system consists of five high schools and four middle and elementary schools. Opportunities for higher education and occupational training are available through Louisiana State University, the largest university in the state, Southern University, Baton Rouge Community College, Westside Technical College, and Our Lady of the Lake College.
